| It's never too late to join Pack 172 and we always have spots available for 1st through 5th grade boys. In addition, every May we invite Kindergarteners to join the Pack for our summertime activities. This is a great opportunity for these boys to get a head start on their Scouting experiences. To foster friendships, each boy is assigned to small group, called Dens, of 4-8 scouts of the same age.

France was our first international visitor and we have recently had visitors from Canada, the UK and Austrailia. Now Scouts can we get a visitor from each of the 50 states? We were at 30+ states in Novermber '08.

Cub Scout Sports Day - Come out and have a fun day with your fellow Cub Scouts. We will have a variety of games to play and maybe some new ones for you to learn! Popcorn Blitz Day - This event will kick-off our popcorn sales where each den will be responsible for a target area to hit for door-to-door sales. Two adults will walk each area with a small group of scouts and a wagon for instant sales. All scouts who participate both days will be treated to a special fun event. Fall Pack Campout - Pack 172 agrees that outdoor activities and involving the entire family are hallmarks of a good Cub Scouting program. Busscher State Park near Bastrop is the location of the Pack's family overnight camp. Games, fun, belt loops, food and hopefully campfire fun await you. Older and younger brothers and sisters are invited to join the fun. A special camping committee is working on a program. Many experienced Pack 172 campers will be on hand so don’t worry if you have never gone camping before. This is a great location and environment for your family to enjoy. Veteran's Day Parade- This will be our second entry into this annual Universal City event. The Parade starts at the UC fire station and ends at the VFW near RAFB. This year we will likely be decorating bikes to ride in the parade - Parents need to walk or ride next to their own Scout for safety and control reasons. Thanks. Fire Hydrant Painting - Firefighters have done so much for our community and freely give their time to educate our Cub Scouts on fire safety and provide fire station tours to our dens on demand. This service project is a small way to help make their jobs a little easier and brighten the community with a stroke of the brush. Get those smocks ready because this could be messy. Pinewood Derby - The classic Cub Scout event returns. Our standard Cub Scout den and Pack races will continue to be "fastest car wins" Adults and siblings are welcome to build and race their own cars for family bragging rights. - Goodwill Goodturn - Goodwill Goodturn is the annual nationwide Scouting collection drive for Goodwill Industries. This event takes place over 2 Saturdays and only takes the Pack less than 30 minutes to canvas over 800 homes for Goodwill donations. The first Saturday we place door hangers and next Saturday will collect the donations that the pack delivers to Goodwill. The event goes even faster if the whole family gets involved. This is a quick way for our scouting families to help a worthy cause. Bike Education and Ride Day - Ever wonder how to keep your bike up and running in tip top shape? This is a Scout objective at nearly all cub scout levels. Come learn how to care for your bike, and take a Pack ride together. Details to come. Rocket Day - This has always been a Pack 172 favorite - build and launch your rockets with Art Appelwhite's rocket hobby group. Details are being finalized on this event. NASA tour and overnight- Come visit the NASA Johnson Space Center in nearby Galveston - this year the program is open to more Scouts. Scouts will participate in space themed experiments and projects and get to spend the night in the facility itself.Come visit the NASA Johnson Space Center in nearby Galveston - this year the program is open to more Scouts. Scouts will participate in space themed experiments and projects and get to spend the night in the facility itself. Operation Homefront Easter Prep- So many of our local families are impacted by folks stationed overseas. Operation homefront helps those family members remain behind to manage the home. Our Pack will help OH get ready for their annual Easter celebration for local children. Pack Wide Hike- When was the last time you put on your boots, grabbed a water bottle and went on a good family hike? More than likely, too long ago. More details will follow on this event. Cubmobile Derby - Think simplified soapbox derby and you will get an idea of what the Cubmobile Derby is all about. Each den will assemble and paint a provided kit of materials. Each den will race other dens and all boys will get to ride their gravity driven creation to the bottom of the hill. Each Cubmobile comes standard will a anti-lock braking system that would make Fred Flintstone proud (just kidding there is a lever brake). Fishing Day - What kid doesn't like fishing? You get to get all messy and play with worms. The first Saturday in June - Live Oak Park stocks a small pond for the year before theya re released into the larger lake. Make a picnic day of it for added fun. Bowling Day - Grab your ball and your stinky rental shoes - it's back. Always a great day at the lanes with this fun family event. SA Field of Dreams and Night at the Rampage - attending our local minor league teams can be fun. Want more - how about sleeping in the outfield at the Missions or on the ice at the Rampage? Both teams welcome Scouts annualy to their games and sleepover events. More details to follow. Annual Picnic & Raingutter Regatta - And don’t forget the nighttime pool party too… The final activity of the summer is always crowd pleaser. We start the afternoon off with our Raingutter Regatta, which involves small balsa wood sailboats that are assembled, decorated, and raced via lungpower by the boys. After the races our entire Cub Scout family enjoys burgers and hot dogs. Once the sun has gone down we open the swimming pool for a nighttime swim party. These activities are in addition to our monthly Pack meetings, your den meetings, Alamo Area Council campouts, and Pack supported Council events such as Goodwill Good Turn, Cub & One Campouts, and Summer camps.
Your Pack committee has planned the following events for this scouting year.
Cub Scout Sports Day - Come out and have a fund day with your fellow Cub Scouts.
All scouts who participate in this event will get to go to a free popcorn sales party at the end of the day held at a local chidren's fun spot. Fall Pack Campout - Pack 172 agrees that outdoor activities and involving the entire family are hallmarks of a good Cub Scouting program. Nearby Palmetto State Park is the location of the Pack's family overnight camp. Just wait until you see these trails, you're going to think you been taken back in time to the age of the dinosaurs. Large plants trees surround you in this lush area just east of San Antonio.
Patriotic Day - How does our government and its elections work. Who will win our mock election between our made up political parties? Only the Cub Scouts can help decide. We will also be making hand-made cards for soldiers serving overseas. These cards will be included with any Military Donation popcorn sold by our pack!
Pinewood Derby - The classic Cub Scout event returns with a new high performance track this year. The parents from Wolf Den 5 are building the Pack a brand new track and our whole pack is collecting cans to get a brand-new electronic timer. Our standard Cub Scout den and Pack races will continue to be "fastest car wins" format but the open class will be broken into 2 new races. An under 16 siblings race where sisters and brothers can complete against any Cub Scout cars that want to race some more for family bragging rights. And just because building a fast car has gotten too easy in this Google.com era, we are turning the tables and announcing a new race category called the "Slow as Molasses" race (note that "slow" refers to the cars not the adults racing them). Being the last to cross the finish line sounds easy enough but in order to win the car must cross the finish line. This is a challenge that will get our Derby Dads thinking. Goodwill Goodturn - Goodwill Goodturn is the annual nationwide Scouting collection drive for Goodwill Industries. Aquarena Springs visit - We are still working out the details, but this is sure to be a fun getaway in February. Cubmobile Derby - Derbies, Derbies, and yet one more derby... Think simplified soapbox derby and you will get an idea of what the Cubmobile Derby is all about. Each den will assemble and paint a provided kit of materials. Each den will race other dens and all boys will get to ride their gravity driven creation to the bottom of the hill. Your Pack committee has planned the following events for this scouting year. Wacky Water Wing Ding The South Texas summers are very hot to say the least but for one afternoon we guarantee that it will be way kool! Imagine an all out war of water. To make things fair our Tiger Cubs (1st graders) can bring the biggest super soaker they can carry our Adult leaders get the smallest squirt gun 25 cents can buy. Structured games will be planned and a king-kong size water balloon slingshot target range will be available for the big kids (i.e., adults). Warning you will get soaked at this event

Belt-Looporee Pack 172 will be holding its first belt-looporee which will be a fun-filled day of activities and games designed to help our scouts earn belt loops and maybe even a pin or two to add to their uniform. The event will be held at Red Horse Park in Universal City where there is a pavillion, baseball field, tennis court, basketball court, and trails. Each scout will be able to choose from many belt loop and pin opportunities. Earn away!
Tent-'N-Trails Pack Overnighter Pack 172 agrees that outdoor activities and involving the entire family are hallmarks of a good Cub Scouting program. Nearby Choke Canyon State Park is the location of the Pack's family overnight camp. Older and younger brothers and sisters are invited to join the fun. A special camping committee is working on a program that will be an enjoyable adventure for first time and seasoned campers alike with both winterized shelters and tent camping available. Many experienced Pack 172 campers will be on hand so don’t worry if you have never gone camping before. This is a great location and environment for your family to enjoy.

Bat Experience at Old Tunnel WMA (Old Tunnel WMA website) The experience of having 3 million Brazilian free-tailed bats fly by your face without touching you is impossible to describe in this short narrative. Let us just say it's an experience you and your children will never forget and something they will talk about all the way home. UFO Rocketeers It's a bird, its a plane, it's a qubit? What's a qubit anyway? Well Pack 172 is taking Model rocketry to another world with our UFO rocket launch. Each boy will assemble, decorate, and launch his own UFO craft during our first Pack event of the school year. Maybe we should let NORAD know to be on the look out for some strange flying objects over Texas. McAllister Park Bike Odyssey (McAllister Park website) The paved bike trails in McAllister Park will be the new venue for this popular Pack event. After our ride we will grill some hotdogs and play some adventure games. McAllister has the most extensive bike trail network in all San Antonio and quite a bit of wildlife to see (deer and wild turkeys are often spotted). We will be pedaling the well-shaded, paved trails so it should be an enjoyable ride for all ability levels.
Walk the Rock at Enchanted Rock (Enchanted Rock SNA website) It's big (425 feet high), pink, solid granite, is designated as National Natural Landmark, and is right up the road in the Hill Country. This is an absolutely amazing structure to explore and sure to be a memorable outing for the whole family. Pack a picnic lunch and join us as we ascend to the top of one of the nation's largest batholiths.
USS Lexington Campout (USS Lexington website) The Blue Ghost aircraft carrier of World War II fame is the host for this unique overnight experience. Sleep in bunks, visit the chow line, and walk in the footsteps of the brave men who served our country so courageously. This campout also allows siblings to attend so you can make this a fun event for the family. The ship never leaves port so if you ever need to get your sea legs back you can always visit the adjacent Texas State Aquarium (http://www.texasstateaquarium.org/).

Mission Trail Bike Odyssey After over 3.5 miles of pedaling our Cub Scouts were not the least bit "tire-d". We had a great time exploring Mission Espada and the San Antonio river trail. The time trial results have been authenticated by our accounting firm and fastest times were:
1. Matt P. -- 17.29 seconds 2. Neal C. -- 18.98 seconds 3. Jeremy F. -- 19.24 seconds Special thanks to Keebler/Kellog for donating the yummy snacks!
Veterans Day Program The Cub Scouts of Pack 172 participated in a special Veterans Day Program at Olympia Elementary. The Scouts conducted the opening and closing flag ceremonies and guarded the colors for the duration of the one hour program on a very windy day.
Launch Pad Rocketeers Just whose idea was it to launch with big engines, parachutes, with wind gusts over 15 miles per hour? Well in my defense it sure seemed to be a good idea at the time. The only problem for future launches anything flying lower will be a let down. I must say it sure added to the excitement trying to predict if a particular rocket would ever be seen again.
Special thanks goes out to our Rocket Recovery Team for trying to capture our wandering travelers so that they can tempt fate again on a future mission. Over forty individual rocket launches were conducted (no engine failures, Yea!). William S. gets the pack record for distance traveled (his rocket was recovered, thankfully). We almost had to call the Guinness Book of World Records for that one rocket that almost landed in the back of a passing pickup truck.
Pack 172 would also like to thank Mr. Art Applewhite of Alamo Rocketeers and Mr. Tim Reidy of the San Antonio Rocket Society (and fellow Cub Scouter) for conducting our launch and lending their launch equipment and expertise.
For those who would like a free Cub Scout Logo UFO/Cubit like Mr. Applewhite launched you can download a template from Art Applewhite Rockets . Also if you would like to see some really big rockets that fly even higher, visit the Hill Country Rocketeers Event Page
Holiday Good Turn The Scouts of Pack 172 helped bring some holiday cheer to the Senior citizens at Autumn Winds Retirement Lodge in Schertz by handing out the Holiday cards signed by our boys. They must have enjoyed our company because they invited the Scouts to stay and play BINGO with them.
Pinewood Derby This classic Cub Scout event proved to be the most competitive to date. We needed a couple of tie breaker races to deterime the final rankings. Boys, start your engines. It's time to start wind tunnel testing your new design ideas for next years race.
Blue & Gold Banquet Over 160 people attended our annual blue and gold banquet and father/son cake bake auction. One of my favorite parts of the Cubs in the Future theme was reading all the amazing things our Cubs plan to do when they become adults.
Good Turn for Goodwill San Antonio Area Scouts have been helping Goodwill Industries for over 40 years. This year the Cub Scouts braved the rain and wind to distribute door hangers to 800 homes (a new Pack record) and collected literally a truck load of donated items.
Scout Hike at Government Canyon Our Scouts and their Akelas enjoyed an absolute perfect 68 degree March day for a 4 mile hike in the newly opened Government Canyon State Natural Area. The scouts also conducted a Leave No Trace service project by picking up trash from around the picnic area, parking lots, and along the trail. The park rangers even took time to educate us on what activities they do to protect the park and its guests and even let us know about a planned controlled burn inside the park and why that was important for them to do. As part of the Leave No Trace Awareness Award the boys created posters of what they learned.
NASA Spacecenter Campout Houston, we had no problem camping out among the spacecraft, watching space movies on the big screen, conducting science experiements, engineering Astronaut protection systems, and getting a private tour of NASA Facilities. Look for a return trip in 2008.
Family Kite Flying Day About 30 Pack 172 family members attended our first ever Kite Flying event. The intermittent 8-mile/hr winds were not so conducive for kite flying success but everyone managed to get their hand assembled/decorated kites off the ground for at least a minute or so. The scouts had a great time getting their shoes muddy, catching frogs, and playing on the playground so all in all it was a great day. Thanks to Keebler for providing the snacks and Lisa S. for bring the battery powered radio so that the Adults could hear the end of the Spurs-Mavericks game while trying to figure out how to tie the kite knot that looked so easy in the instruction page.
Cosmic Bowling With the lights out those bowling lanes were extra kool for this summertime pack activity. Approximately 60 scouters participated in the unique experience of bowling in the dark. A number of scouts scored triple digits and we have at least one confirmed case of a scout out scoring his dad by 3 pins. Now we can not mention any names but lets just say it would not take a committee to give this guy a chair.
Field of Dreams Pack 172 had the most participation of any Alamo Area Scout unit at the annual San Antonio Missions baseball Field of Dreams campout. Unfortunately the Missions did not beat the Midland Rockhounds but the post-game fireworks show was surely one of the best displays ever seen in San Antonio. Rumor has it that somebody actually got to sleep during the outfield campout.
Caving the Caverns Our Cub Scouts went underground ... way underground at the largest public accessible cavern in Texas. It was not an inexpensive trip but our boys also got to participate in some unique activities such as the zip line, a 3-story climbing wall, and panning for gems and arrow heads. The caverns are quite extensive and we all learned a lot about what exists under our feet.
Annual Picnic & Raingutter Regatta Wow, what a day -- great food, great sportmanship, a bit of science thanks to Diet Pepsi and Mentos, swimming in the dark, and the weather was good too. The Annual Picnic and Raingutter Regatta was a great way to complete the summer activities and kick off the new school year.
